I was in Santa Monica heading to my favorite store and was greeted by these signs. While I had heard that Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic was closing stores, I never imagined this one to be part of it. I have since learned that all her stores are going to be closed. For so many years, I would go into this store and soak up the beauty, buying an occasional thing or two. I loved everything about that world. I bought Rachel's books, studied the look and tried to replicate it in my own way. A couple years ago, I was at the Santa Monica Flea Market and saw Rachel hunting for treasures. I couldn't let the moment go by so I approached her and told her how much I enjoyed her style and what an inspiration she was to me. She graciously thanked me and wanted to know if I was "in the business". I only wished.
So as Shabby Chic closes it's doors and reorganizes it's life, I am reminded that things happen along our journey we're not expecting. In such cases, we do what we can, with our head held high, gather our support around us and re-emerge stronger than before. All the best to Rachel.

I put these shiny ornaments in the flower pocket vase for Christmas and liked it so much it's still there.
Even my Christmas Cactus thinks it's fine to be out in April. I love the surprise this plant gave me. My lesson I've learned from this; don't wait to bloom. Whenever you're ready, go for it! Do you have unexpected surprises around. Share them with me. In the meantime, I'm going to be in the garden, looking for buds.
